The history of Salwar Kameez(सलवार कमीज़) is quite old. It is said to have originated in the Mughal era. The wives of Mughal emperors were the first to begin wearing Salwar Kameez. These would just be a pair of loose tunic and pants embroidered with gold or silver thread, precious stones, etc. Time went by and Salwar Kameez underwent lots of different transformations. At almost around the same time, Anarkali came into existence. As the Mughals had ruled over Punjab, the Salwar Kameez style spread across Punjab and all the Punjabi women, whether Hindu or Muslims started dressing up in this dress.
From Northern Indian states like Punjab, salwar suits started spreading across the whole of India.

Now, let us read about some trending salwar kameez styles popular amongst girls and women of all age groups.

1.     ANARKALI SUITS

Anarkalis are long and flowy dresses in the shape of long frocks with a churidar or pant and dupatta. These suits are named after the slave courtesan of Akbar’s court Anarkali. These days Anarkali suits have become a fusion of ancient traditional designs infused with modern elements. Anarkalis flatter almost all body types.

There are 3 basic kinds of Anarkali:

a.      Floor Length Anarkali
This has become one of the most popular types of Anarkali these days, as it renders a regal appearance to the wearer. These Anarkalis are floor-length long and more appropriate for women with a heavy figure. It will hide the flaws on your body and make you look slender.

b.     Frock Shaped Anarkali
These are shorter and more skin fitting. Frock shaped Anarkalis are highly convenient for women without prominent curves. You can pair these up with leggings or trousers.

c.      A-Line Anarkali Suits
The specialty of A-line Anarkali Suits is that they are narrow at the top and wider at the bottom. These suits make your waistline look more prominent.

2.     PAKISTANI SUITS

Pakistani Salwar Kameez is also known as Lawn suit. These suits reflect the culture and tradition of Pakistan through intricate designs and embroideries. Pakistani Salwar Kurtas are extremely elegant, charming and exude a sleek, sober look. They can be worn on all kinds of formal and casual occasions. Most of the time these are straight cut suits that are worn with normal churidars and chic pant style bottoms. The rich embroidery and Paisley work adds all the charisma to these suits.

3.     PALAZZO SUITS

Did you know that palazzos are fusion wear? They are called fusion wear because they portray a harmonious combination of Western fashion and Indian tradition. Long straight cut suits are very smartly paired up with flared bottoms but the flares are minimal, they aren’t as stretched out as Shararas. Palazzo suits have taken over the international fashion scene and are worn by international celebs as well as commoners. These are extremely comfortable and can be easily flaunted at both formal and informal occasions.

4.     PANT STYLE SALWAR KAMEEZ

Pant style salwar suits were absolutely non-existent even 4 to 5 years back. They are a recent trend and a hot favorite with young women these days. The kurtas are normal, straight cut ones but the pants resemble western trousers. The ending doesn’t have any flares and the length doesn’t exceed the ankles. It might have a short slit and buttons at the bottom and is quite ideal for office wear. Pant style suits are a huge favorite amongst stylish young women as these appear extremely elegant.

5.     SHARARAS

Sharara resemble palazzo suits, but the only difference is that Sharara have a wider leg area at the bottom which gives it the appearance of a skirt or a lehenga. The Sharara suit is normally paired with a knee-length kameez. These are more comfortable during summers, as the open leg garment has a lot of space for air to enter and doesn’t stick to the skin. The flowing flares at the bottom add volume to your figure and really suits slender waisted, slim women.

6.     AFGHANI SALWAR KAMEEZ

Afghani Salwar Kameez has originated from the traditional Afghani clothing worn by women from different ethnicities residing in Afghanistan. These salwar suits comprise a short kurta piece along with a bottom piece with multiple layers of folds in the bottom garment which makes it look quite like a dhoti. Afghanis look good on both short and tall women.

7.     Churidar and Kameez

The good old churidar kameez is still a hot favorite with Indian women. Though now we have lycra leggings shaped like churidars which can be worn in place of churidars. Churidar suits are popular for decades and decades and haven’t gone through any modifications as such. The kameez worn over a churidar is normally long and the close-fitting bottom is narrow with several layers of cloth shaped like bangles or churis which gives it the name Churidaar. This garment accentuates the curves of the leg and makes the wearer look slim and tall.

Salwar Suits(सलवार सूट) are always in high demand because of their comfort level and the ease with which they can be worn. You can travel anywhere and everywhere in them.
